Amortized vs. simple interest loans โ€” and how extra payments change the math

Almost every mortgage, auto loan, and personal loan you'll encounter uses amortized interest: each fixed monthly payment covers that month's interest first, and whatever is left over reduces your principal. Early in the loan, most of your payment goes to interest. Later, more of it goes to principal โ€” even though the payment itself never changes.

A smaller category of loans โ€” often short-term or "add-on" installment loans โ€” use simple interest, calculated once as principal ร— rate ร— time, with no compounding. The two methods can produce very different totals for the same rate and term, which is why it matters to know which formula applies to your loan before you compare offers.

Amortized loansSimple interest loans
Interest recalculated on the remaining balance every monthInterest calculated once on the original principal
Extra payments reduce future interest immediatelyExtra payments may not reduce interest already baked into the schedule

Tip: On an amortized loan, even one extra payment applied directly to principal early in the term can shave months โ€” sometimes years โ€” off your payoff date. Try the Extra Payment Loan Calculator with your own numbers to see the effect.

Yes. All calculations run locally in your browser using JavaScript. The numbers you enter are never sent to a server, stored in a database, or shared with anyone.
An amortized loan recalculates interest on your remaining balance every month, so extra payments reduce future interest right away. A simple interest loan calculates total interest once, up front, on the original principal. See the comparison above, or try both calculators with your own numbers.
Our calculators use standard, industry-accepted amortization and interest formulas. Results are estimates for planning purposes โ€” your actual lender statement may differ slightly due to rounding, fees, or day-count conventions.
Mortgages, auto loans, personal loans, business loans, and most other fixed-rate installment loans. The underlying math is the same standard amortization formula used across all of them.
